As Parish and Town Councils, we are now becoming an increasingly important democratic and accountable tier of Local Government. Only just over a century ago Parish and Town Councils came into existence. Of course we were very different then, but the reason we have become councillors has not changed - we wish to serve our communities, to the best of our ability, to represent their needs, to protect them, and to be their 'voice'.

In Worcestershire, there are around 1,200 Councillors sitting on 151 Parish and Town Councils, and in England, there are approximately 70,000 Councillors on 8,500 Parish and Town Councils.
Every Councillor must sign the Code of Conduct before taking office.
The Good Councillor's Guide says the Council as a corporate body " has a legal existence separate from that of its members."
If your Council is a member of CALC, your Clerk should provide new Councillors with a copy of our New Councillor's Pack containing guidance on the role of the Councillor. Lists of CALC and NALC publications are available in the Members' section.
The Good Councillor's Guide says of CALC "It is vital that your Council is a member to benefit from its services and keep abreast of changes affecting Parish Councils."
The benefits of membership of CALC are explained in a leaflet available on the Councils' page.
