Understanding Worcestershire’s Gypsy Roma Traveller Community
WHAT: The session will explore culture, common misconceptions, some of the barriers faced by GRT communities and the importance of positive engagement and understanding at a local level. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions in an open and relaxed environment, including those you may not usually have the chance to ask.
Councillors will also be able to find out more about the support, advice and further GRT cultural awareness training available locally.
WHO: The session will be delivered by Abi from The Circle of Hope – Gypsy, Roma & Traveller, drawing on lived experience and work with communities and professionals across Worcestershire

Lucy Bird
Health and Well-Being Officer
Following a career as an Analytical Chemist, Lucy decided to pursue her passion to work in the community in 2010 having volunteered in various roles since the age of 12. Lucy worked for a Parish Council in Cambridgeshire running a new initiative, a ‘Time Bank’, where residents support one another by giving their time, from gardening to teaching others to use a computer to holding a Film Club in their home. The Time Bank grew to have over 160 individual members and organisational members building immeasurable community resilience. She developed a further project, which is still being run by the Parish Council, to support those living with neurological conditions such as Dementia and Parkinsons Disease, and for older people to maintain their physical and mental health through adapted activities.
Lucy worked as a Social Prescriber throughout the Covid pandemic in Evesham and surrounding GP practices, ensuring people were listened to and signposted on to appropriate support. This gave her an insight into the challenges people face and their lack of knowledge of where to go when help is needed.
Lucy has continued to work with communities developing support networks and activities to improve health and wellbeing, building connections and reducing isolation. As the Health and Wellbeing Officer for Worcestershire CALC, Lucy hopes to bring her experience and knowledge to help Parish and Town Councils, who are at the heart of communities across the County, to identify needs and to create vibrant, connected, and supportive environments that enhance the quality of life for everyone.
